I am an ALIEN?!

Yes, it is true. According to the American Government, I am an Alien...

The purpose of the ESTA is “to determine the eligibility of, and whether there exists a law enforcement or security risk in permitting, the alien to travel to the United States. Upon review of such biographical information, the Secretary of Homeland Security shall determine whether the alien is eligible to travel to the United States under the program.”

I am looking into getting a Visa for America, so that I can go and visit my dearest Peter in the Summer. And I know some of you are garenteed to be expressing your concerns over this, as it has only been a month, but we are serious about this, and also I need to get a Visa sorted out ASAP. Because if I am rejected for an ESTA (short term stay) then it can take up to 6 months to get a Tourist Visa, and a whole lot more cash lol.

I love my Baby, And he's TOTALY worth travelling the Galaxy!

Hi there, Jack

Best of luck with your ESTA application, and with US bureaucracy in general. I very much doubt there's any reason why you should be turned down for an ESTA.

One other thought: how long do they last for? You don't want to get one now if it will run out before you travel.

Take care

Mark

Thanks, its not really a matter that they'll turn me down for one, more that they'll deny my access when i get there = wasted flights lol.
And i can stay for 90 days or less, and it lasts for 2 years, so quite a good deal for £15 lol.

Thanks, Jack xx

Yeah I know that terminology quite well in my family on my dad's side (he has been in the U.S. for about 35+ years)

I get the feeling that the day before you arrive Peter wont sleep b/c he will be too excited

Guessing no chance of you two coming my way eh?
Oh well Take Care Jack and it will be nice to have you in the same time zone for a change

What a stupid term to use; like a person is not human or something lol. Whatever happened to the term 'foreign'? Anyway the USA and England are great pals and as long as you don't look like a terrorist it shouldn't be any problem. It is a good idea to get the red tape straightened away ahead of time. If you go next summer remember it can be very hot there and it takes a while to aclimate. Always nice to have something to look forward to in the future. bfn - Wayne :)

I would have to agree with you there Wayner, i dont quite know why they use that term, but w/e. And i'm sure i won't get booted out of the country for no reason, but as always, you can't predict the futre lol. As for the climate, i know it will be hot, and fortunately i'm decently used to hot climates as we go on holiday each year. Don't mean to boast, just stating haha

Take care,

Hi there, Jack (and others)

The meaning of "alien" as "(person or thing) from another country or place" has a very long history: if Wikipedia is to be believed, it has been used in that sense in American law since at least the 1790s, so it has almost certainly had the same sense in British English for even longer. The Wiktionary entry has it derived from Latin alienus ("belonging to someone else"), itself from Latin alius ("other"), as in et al. ("and others", e.g. in citations of academic or legal writings).

The current sense of "extraterrestrial being" is obviously related ("alien to this planet"), but necessarily a lot more recent.

Isn't the English language fun? :-)

Take care
