Cornish Fairlings

No, this is not a nickname I have, but it is rather a biscuit. And YES Peter, it IS a biscuit! As we were hit with a mini-blizzard today College was cancelled and so I was home today, and in the Christmassy mood. And a baking mood. Why not combine the two?! I sat there going through my recipes. I decided to either make, shortbread (but I needed lavender for that), gingerbread (but I wanted cinnamon) or these. I’m sorry contestant number 1, the correct answer was ... Cornish Fairings. Why did I decide this? Because I wanted Cinnamon in and I missed my homeland. Well my half-homeland (my mum is Cornish) and I wanted to try it :)

We normally go to Cornwall every year to visit family and hang out for a week, but we didn’t go this year due to my parents’ splitting up, so needless to say I’ll be away for a long time. Which is a shame as they had this one shop, where I would INSIST we go each year – The Lavender Pillow – which specialises in Halloween costumes and witchcraft utensils; but they had this AMASING Egyptology section, where I have got most of my collection from haha. But it is ever-expanding :P

Oh, and I came out to someone else.

So me and Peter were online this morning, which I felt kind of guilty for as he was up until 4 am, but I just lost track of time and we got to have a really nice long chat. I loved it. Until he started to cry, and cry he did. I just hated not being able to comfort him and hold his hand. Why did I have to find the man of my dreams, but on another continent?!

I'm getting the impression your parents have recently split up; sorry to hear that and I hope you are ok. I would love one of those biscuits in the middle of the afternoon with a coffee or tea. Be careful with the pastries though Jack cos they go straight to the waist as the years go by lol. Us gay guys do need to watch the diet and get some exercise; the married heteros always let themselves go. OMG let Peter get his sleep; there is a 6hr time difference between England and Texas I believe. It's great he has you to help him through some difficulties. I wonder how much plane travel is because of on-line love affairs? I comment on another gay blog (18 yrs old at a boarding school in Europe at the time, but he is at university in the States now) and he hopped a plane to see his on-line lover for a couple of weeks and had a great time; he really missed him when he got back to school. bfn - Wayne :) (love the Egyptology stuff!)

Yes, she left about june (about 2-3 weeks before my exams lol) ... check my first post i think :/

Haha, mee too, i'm yet to see how 'dunkable' they are. But it is not a pastry, it is similar to a cookie (but not, me and Peter chacked! haha)

But dw, i'm keeping fit and am relatively image-concious lol. But i do let him sleep, we jsut lost track of time and then i sent him to bed haha.

And it will cost about £500 for the flights ($840), but thats a great story :)

But thanks :P I collect them and most have other stuff in it haha. Like, one of the pots has my early attempts at a novel, the sarcophasus has a mummy, one of the other pots has jewellery ect. But you probably didnt want that level of detail haha.

RECIPE, BOY, RECIPE!!!!

Or was it this one:
100g plain flour
pinch of salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon mixed spice
40g golden caster sugar
50g unsalted butter, chilled and diced
1 tablespoon of mixed peel, very finely chopped
3 tablespoons of golden syrup (in cold weather, warm the syrup before adding to mix)

1. Preheat oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Prepare a couple of baking sheets.
2. Sift the flour, salt, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, ginger and mixed spice into a larger bowl.
3. Stir in the sugar.
4. Add the diced butter and rub in until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
5. Stir in the mixed peel, and then the syrup.
6. Using your hands, roll the dough into about 20 marble-sized balls. Space them well apart on the baking sheets.
7. Bake in oven for about 7 minutes or until golden.

Hi there, Jack

The Cornish fairings look very tasty - I'm getting hungry now :-)

I hadn't realised you had links to Cornwall. I lived there for 7 years (age 11 - 18), and my parents stayed there for another 12 years after that. We were in the far west, near Helston - what part are your family from?

I'm sorry to hear about your parents splitting up. Yes, you did mention it in your first post, and some things you've said recently have implied it, but it hadn't properly sunk in with me until now.

Anyway, time for bed: I have a very early start tomorrow.

*hugs*

Oh, and the Egyptian things are very cool. Nat Geo had a recent piece on King Tut, I loved it! Maybe I'm a budding Egyptologist.

Next time I make it over, I'll grab you and take you with me to Cornwall...I'll show you my favorite places if you return the favor!

Peace <3

Wow mark, i didnt know you had links to Cornwall yourself lol. We are from the south west, but the name escapes ma haha. Why did you move away? And thanks for the support, i havent talked much about them yet haha, but dont worry, i will. Night Mark xx

Jay: The recipe is there (its a link in the text) so i'll make it more obvious lol. And that is not the recipe, although it is similar. Hahaa cool abot the Egypt stuff and just this guy who i go to college with. No big deal. It does haha.
